Alaska: Lonely Planet Travel Video

Experience Alaska with Lonely Planet author Greg Benchwick. You’ll see more than 80 straight days of 24 hours of sunlight giving you plenty of time to admire the icy white landscapes of the Arctic ocean that’s been home to the Inupiat people for thousands of years. Special note from Greg: Oops, I called the sealskin boat an ‘upiak’, but actually it’s an ‘umiak’, 24 hours of sunlight can really mess with your head! Produced by Lonely Planet TV

World champion big wave surfers, Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala rode into surfing history last week when they towed into a monster tsunami created by Child’s Glacier in South-Central Alaska. The creator/producer, Ryan Casey, “disovered” the wave in 1995, while on location shooting in Alaska. Then after finishing his last film, Quest, a documentary on big wave surfing, he showed Garrett the wave… that was six months ago. So after a short scout in June, we went up in August to film this… For more information contact: info@deepwaterfilms or Ryan @ ryanmayrcasey@hotmail.com

  1. “Alaskan income is $58000/year, but they just live in houses looking poor ‘cuz everything is so expensive” 🙂

  2. Moving to Alaska with my girlfriend in like 4-6 years :3

Which is quite ironic, as I’m moving from one of the most southern most states in the United States, to the Northern Most state. But I LOVE the cold, and dark, so WOO!

  3. there is nothing like the peace and quiet of being in the wilderness-no cars, no noise. Your senses come alive. You really experience true peace in the wilderness away from society.

  4. Alaska is similar to those states on the south of the USA. It looks like northen “Arizona”. Somewhere else there is fuss and bustle, Wall Street and 5th Avenue, but here is tranquil life. So much nature around. Beautiful places!

  5. My dream is to visit Alaska but it s very big state and you have to use plane to get to some places, what is probobaly expensive. (I wish to visit far North) Not for a student budget so far haha

  6. @ajacoub Budalo jedna imate naljepšu obalu na celom svetu, pola evrope dolazi vama a ti bi da gineš…
Ja volim hladnije podneblje ali bez vašeg mora nema smisla živeti…

  7. i’ve lost my admiration for lonely planet a while ago, but still sad to see that you can work for them using terms as “eskimos” and being totally americano-centric. how can you generalize peoples ambitions and life-styles like that – summarizing their lifes utter goal wanting to earn up for a snow mobile. you seem to have learnt nothing traveling.

  8. @akrobin31 u lucky bastard. i havent been but i already know that i would love to live out there out in the bush . society is sick today, otherwise id be there.

  9. u must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murderded in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vidoes in 30 minutes the dead girl will apear in your room .tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy and paste to be saved…

  17. @rdrums89: yeah there is a history of glaciations over the geological record spanning millions of years. Its just that the present warming is happening at such a speed that adaptation may not be possible, and this time the warming is caused by us!
