What is the cheapest/easiest way to get to Alaska?

Question by rangerkloog: What is the cheapest/easiest way to get to Alaska?
I’d like to go up to Homer this coming June, but at least to the southern bit (Ketchikan). We’ll be leaving from Washington state but that, too, is flexible. The marine highway is so expensive, and driving is so far, but I’ve had trouble finding information on trains & buses. Anyone have any tips? Thanks!

Take the mailboat. Nothing fancy, but inexpensive.

Dolphins on the Alaska Marine Highway

My friends and I were riding the ferry from Bellingham, WA to Ketchikan, AK. I was making a video of the scenery with my little snapshot camera, when all of a sudden this pod of White-Sided Dolphins showed up! I was totally unprepared, hence the poor cinematography. 😉

On the Alaska state ferry M/V Aurora in Feb. 2011. 14 ft seas, freezing spray, 80 MPH winds in Northern Chatham Strait.

You would have to make sure the Russians would allow it. If so I am sure you could hire a US boat to do it.

WIG, I heard that there is a Ferry service being run in Alaska using a WIG type aircraft, anyone heard of this

Question by gregva2001: WIG, I heard that there is a Ferry service being run in Alaska using a WIG type aircraft, anyone heard of this
I know that Beriev in the former USSR had built and tested several wing in ground effect sea-plane type aircraft for the military, one destroyed in an accident, the other moth-balled. Would a large transport type WIG aircaft be able to go across the Atlantic and/or pacific? or even for work on inland lakes, rivers etc.
