The Alaska Marine Highway runs from Bellingham to Ketchikan and other points along the coast and out into the Aleutians. It’s run by the state, not fancy but it does the job.

Bellingham to Juneau is 6 one way. Since it takes about two days, you might want to pay for a roomette. There are occasional specials. See the web site below for details.

To get from Seattle to Bellingham you can take the bus or the train.

Q&A: Anyone traveled the Alaska Marine Highway (Ferry) in winter?

Question by Denali Rose: Anyone traveled the Alaska Marine Highway (Ferry) in winter?
I’m hoping to go to Washington this winter from Alaska without flying. I know the summer ferry trips are gorgeous, but are the winter trips worth it? Or is it too dark and cold?

Best answer:

Answer by cyanne2ak
They’re cold as hell!!! But, you get what you pay for, so the more you spend the more comfort you’ll be in on the Ferry. I lived in Alaska for 16 years.

Before its too late? Is Alaska going somewhere?

I don’t know about Ferry trips since it would be a long one from Washington State to Alaska but there certainly are cruises. You should repost this question in an area where people from Washington state would see it and answer your question better then us flat landers could.

What ferry Can I take to go to kodiak Alaska?

Question by Lilly: What ferry Can I take to go to kodiak Alaska?
I am in texas, and have a job in kodiak alaska. I am trying to figure out what city can i take a ferry directly to kodiak. is it seattle? thanks

Answer by littlemissknowitall
Go to the Alaska Marine Highway System web site and look at the schedule for Kodiak.
from the web….
“The Alaska Marine Highway System provides passenger and vehicle service to Kodiak and Port Lions aboard the M/V Tustumena or the M/V Kennicott from Homer or Whittier. Staterooms, full-service dining rooms, solarium and public shower are available. Make reservations well in advance, particularly if you plan to bring a vehicle. For reservations, call 800-642-0066. Also see the Alaska Marine Highway listing in the business directory for more information. ”

I don’t think that you can take a ferry from Washington State. What you can do, if you have a car, is ferry from Bellingham to Haines, then drive to Homer or Whittier. If you are not bringing a car, it will probably be cheaper to fly. If you are thinking that you want to bring a lot of stuff, like in your car or pulling a trailer, compare the cost of putting it on the ferry with sending it with a freight company from Seattle. There are freight consolidators who will ship your belongings by barge to Kodiak. Your best bet is to talk to whoever is hiring you and ask them for advice.

SKAGWAY, Alaska – I trail my fingers in the water as the Zodiac pulls away from the ship and heads for the forest, a dark line on the shore. The second hand on my watch clicks around as we pass a floating iceberg. Twenty seconds, 50 seconds, two minutes on the mark, and by then my hand feels like a lifeless lump of ice. Meanwhile, in this land of extremes, the contrary Alaskan sun shines like a …
